S.A. Materials Flow Analysis | Report
Lifecycles is happy to share the publication of the Vital South Australian Materials Flows: Evidence Report 2022, now available on the Green Industries SA (GISA) website.
This report represents a significant step forward in understanding how materials move through the South Australian economy. Commissioned by GISA, the study supports the state's ongoing commitment to measuring and improving resource efficiency and circular economy outcomes.
Since 2003–04, GISA has monitored recycling activity and waste disposal to track progress against South Australia’s Waste Strategy. As part of this broader initiative, Lifecycles contributed by developing a series of material flow analyses (MFAs) that map the inputs, use, and disposal of materials across the economy.
The study focuses on four priority sectors—building and construction, electronics, organics, and textiles—as well as a whole-of-economy perspective. The findings are presented through detailed Sankey diagrams, which illustrate the complex pathways materials take through the system and highlight opportunities for improved recovery and resource management.
The report provides a critical evidence base to inform policy, planning, and investment decisions aimed at advancing South Australia’s circular economy.
